Challenges for African Agriculture........

          Challenges for African Agriculture........

agriculture/ideas/information/knowledge/basic/seed/weed/water/fertilizer/

What is the future for Sub-Saharan African farms? What role can they play in the development of the subcontinent? These are crucial issues which require answers. The issue of feeding the planet has once again become crucial. The first challenge for these farms is consequently to produce more and better in order to feed Africa’s growing population. They can achieve this by developing a huge natural potential, exploiting the margins made possible by agricultural progress and fighting to obtain secure agricultural prices. With an ever-increasing agricultural population, the second challenge is to promote the available human capital within the smallholding farms. This capital is currently wasted due to the lack of training opportunities, innovation and a favourable social, economic and regulatory situation. With the threat of a lack of employment, food-related problems, conflicts, exoduses and desertification, the third challenge is how to manage to make these efforts to develop and promote sustainable, both in the field and in the whole economy. This requires implementing coherent agricultural, social and environmental policies and integrated regional management. African farmers and the leaders of their organisations are key players in terms of meeting these three challenges and bringing about these essential changes on farms, in regions and in the way agricultural industries are managed. They carry a vision of the future of their farming and the rural world which is essential for orienting the transitions in Africa’s rural economies. This collective work will have met its objective if it helps change the way we view the potential of Africa’s smallholding farms and if all those needed to promote it are given incentives to make long-term commitments......!

agriculture/ideas/information/knowledge/basic

When to Plant Okra

  • You can start okra seeds indoors in peat pots under full light 3 to 4 weeks before the last spring frost date

  • In warmer areas, you can also start okra directly in your garden 3 to 4 weeks before the last spring frost date as long as you cover the plants with a cold frame or grow tunel until the weather warms up fully. Make sure that the covering is 2 to 3 feet tall so that the plants have room to grow.........

  • If you do not start your okra plants early, wait until there is stable, warm weather. You can plant okra in the garden when the soil has warmed to about 65° or 70°F—the warmer, the better........

Choosing and Preparing a Planting Site .

           => As a warm-weather crop, okra appreciates full sun.....

             =>Okra is adaptable and will grow in most soils, though it performs best in                        well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter......

              =>Soil should ideally be on the acidic side, with a pH between 5.8 and 7.0....

HORTICULTURE ..................?

                                    HORTICULTURE........

                                  Horticulture is divided into the cultivation of plants for      food (pomology and olericulture) and plants for ornament  (floriculture and landscape  horticulture).Pomology deals with furit and nut crops. Olericulture deals with herbaceous plants for the kitchen, including, for example, carrots (edible root), asparagus(edible stem), lettuce (edible leaf), cauliflower  (edible flower buds),tamatoes (edible fruit)and peas  (edible seed).Flori culture,deals with the production of flowers and ornamental plants, generally, cut flowers, pot plants, and greenery. Landscape horticulture is a broad category that includes plants for the landscape, including lawn turf but particularly nursery crops such as shrubs, trees   and vines. that is called horticulture ..........

SPECIALIZATION OF HORTICULTURE ....

The specialization of the horticulturist and the success of the crop are influenced by many factors. Among these are climate, terrain, and other regional variations...........

Horticultural Regions

Temprature Zone ........

Temperate zones for horticulture cannot be defined exactly by lines of latitude or longitude but are usually regarded as including those areas where frost in winter occurs, even though rarely. Thus, most parts of Europe north america and northern Asia are included, though some parts of the United States, such as southern Florida, are considered subtropical. A few parts of the north coast of the Mediterranean and the Mediterranean islands are also subtropical. In the Southern Hemisphere, practically all of New zealand  a few parts of Australia, and the southern part of South America  have temperate climates. For horticultural purposes altitude is also a factor; the lower slopes of great mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas and the ands, are included. Thus, the temperate zones are very wide and the range of plants that can be grown in them is enormous, probably greater than in either the subtropical or tropical zones. In the temperate zones are the great coniferous and deciduous forests: pine, spruce , fir, most of the cypresses the deciduous oaks  (but excluding many of the evergreen ones), ash brich and linden................

JASSID ATTACK ON COTTON

     *.. JASSID ATTACK ON COTTON..*

=> The cotton jassid

              sucks sap from the underside of leaves  and leaf buds.When jassid are abundant, cotton growth is stunted,the leaves turn downwards and heavy fruit loss may occur on pre flowering plants.......During aservere attack,leaf shedding occurs.

*....MANAGEMENT....*...

* Natural enemies;

          =>.predatory bugs like ladybird beetles and spiders will attack jassid. Do not kill these natural enemies when you see them......

* Culturral control;

            => Clean cultivation ; avoid excessive use of fertilizer (no more then 3-4 bags of urea) as jassid will be attracted to crops higher in nitrogen ,as they will be tastier ..

=>Grow cotton from 15 APRIL to 31 MAY to escape jassid attack...

* CHEMICAL CANTROL........

        => Usev seed treatment (imidacloprid 70ws@10gm/kg seed at the time of sowing

. Apply dimethoate 40EC 400ml per acre at the time of high infestation, no more than twice ..

. Apply  acephate75sp 250-375gm per acre at the time when pest pressure is highest..

Seedless Plant

                                                     SEEDLESS PLANT...

*Ancient plants that spread to new areas using spores.......

*Include ferns,mosses,and seaweed........

*The first types of plant to live on land.....

                  We are the ugly brothers and sister of the plant kingdom.all of us chlorophyll to make food from sunlight .but we don't have anything as pretty as flower or as tasty as fruit. some of us don't even have leaf or Root...........!

we are a bunch of many types of ancient plants. some of us do like to live near the shore.it's not all sun and surf for seaweeds,through as they cope with being dried out and then soaked through again twice each day!

Mosses and their buddies,liverworts,were the first land plants around 475 million years ago but 175 million years later forest of tree ferns alsocoverd the land our breeding process is quite complicated. unlike flowering plants ,webreed using a using asperm and an egg,not pollen. instead of seed we spread spores that grow into new plants.........

*Largest fronds (fern leaves);king fern(30 ft./long)

*fastest-growingseaweed;gaint kelp (3.3 ft./1m per day)
